A Stuttgart salary leaves €2,607 after tax and rent

Press note for the Where a Salary Goes Further 2026, 2026-09-29.

A median gross salary in Stuttgart leaves €2,607 a month after income tax and the rent of a 60 m² flat, the most of 19 cities compared. The 19 are in Germany, Luxembourg and Norway, in Where a Salary Goes Further 2026, published by ImmigrationDB. Luxembourg leaves the least of them: €1,451 a month.

Three findings

  • Of 27 cities in the United Kingdom, Derby leaves the most after income tax and the mean rent of a dwelling: €2,274 a month, 69% of take-home pay.
  • In Islington, rent takes 83% of take-home pay, the largest share of the 27 British cities.
  • In Munich, a median gross salary of €4,800 leaves €2,100 a month, the least of the 16 German cities.

How it was computed

For each city: its official median gross salary, less income tax and employee contributions for a single person without children (the OECD Taxing Wages model, 2025), less the rent: the city's average rent per m² × 60, or in the United Kingdom the mean monthly rent of a dwelling. Only official figures of the city itself, observed in 2023 or later, count, for cities of 100,000 residents or more, and a ranking never mixes the two rent measures.
